The Past & Future of Ozzfest

I’ve been to 10 Ozzfest’s – basically every one that was an actual touring show & not a 2 day event like the first one was back in 1996.  The rumor is that for 2008 Ozzy is returning to the single destination, 2 day format – reportedly in Dallas.  There are also rumors of Black Sabbath headlining and most likely the show will not be ‘free’.  After the money I spent in 2007 for parking and beer alone (damn that alcoholic wife), I never really saw the ‘free’ part – but I digress.

So basically, if it IS in Dallas, that means as a resident of Ohio, I will not be attending the 2008 Ozzfest (unless Sharon invites me, in which case the Easter Bunny & I might reconsider).  With other touring shows coming down the pipeline, most notably the mega-huge Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival, I’m not even sure the venerable Ozzfest could compete with as much main stage talent. But it would be fun if they tried.

While researching this post, I was reading thru Wikipedia’s Ozzfest article. It’s amazing some of the chart-topping acts that had humble beginnings as nobody’s on Ozzy’s second stage – Slipknot, Mudvayne, Seether, Puya. . .just kidding there. You remember Puya don’t you?

What is also interesting is looking at the bands who’ve graced mainstage who are no longer all that relevant. M.O.M., Crazy Town, Limp Bizkit, P.O.D. – is there a musical similarity there? I think there is.

Ozzy’s show has been a definite breeding ground for new talent, not always playing it safe (Meshuggah, Behemoth, Cradle of Filth) but always showing you a good albeit costly day of entertainment.  I hope the show does play multiple dates around the country despite the economic difficulties of the modern day, large scale outdoor tour.

Although Ozzy does hate Ohio anyways.  I’d still probably have to drive to Detroit to see the damn show.  But that’s a post for another time. . . .
