Dimmu Borgir – Newport Music Hall, Columbus Ohio 4/5/08

Behemoth in ConcertI’ve been looking forward to this show for weeks & I’m happy to say that it was as awesome as I’d hoped. Did you catch the live stream?

Keep of Kalessin was first up – a much hyped ensemble that includes Obsidian Claw, formerly a live musician for Satyricon. To me, they were decently brutal albeit standard Norwegian black metal a la Emperor or Satyricon, playing a short 4 titles highlighted by the final song ‘Damnation’. The band as whole shows a lot of promise, working well together as a cohessive entity as they blasted through their set, really getting the crowd pumped. After the show, I met Obsidian, Thebon (vocalist), Wizziac (bass) and Vyl (drummer – or ‘V’ as he said to call him) and found them all to be very friendly. Obsidian was helpful in giving me their playlist info – my notes were “about the worst he’d ever seen”, he joked. Alas that’s probably true. Anyhow, they were a great group of guys who I will be interested to follow in future releases.

Behemoth was next and quite simply, they KILLED! Their setlist was excellent, their performance was aggressive & tight, and they played like the scene veterans that they are. They always remind me of Cenobites from the movie ‘Hellraiser’ – Cenobites that can piledrive your ears, and watching them is like seeing briefly into the pit itself. Major crowd reaction to them and as always, an excellent showing.

Finally came Dimmu Borgir who gave us a generous 15 song performance that favored the newer album (you’ll have that) while still including the fan favs like ‘In Death’s Embrace’ (W00H00!), ‘Progenies of the Great Apocalypse’, and of course ‘Mourning Palace’. Their set was well played & more visually oriented than usual as they had a big screen behind them that was constantly showing images from the albums or close-ups of the guys onstage. They sounded great, looked evil & dark and played with a lot of heart.

All in all, a great triple bill and well worth the anticipation. Here’s the set lists;

    Hey man. It was indeed a good show. Keep of Kalessin kind of reminded Jason and me of Limbonic Art without keyboards.
    Would have liked to have seen Behemoth play Decade of Therion though. Ah well. Can’t get everything in life you wanted.
    So it’s obvious I remembered the website. Woohoo. haha. Come out to Bernie’s Friday if you can man.

    Limbonic Art is a good analogy, although with LA I am usually so focused on their keyboards that it overshadows the rest of their sound.

    But I can see where you’d be reminded of them by KoK. I think do think they’ll be interesting to watch develop.
